Congress Messe Innsbruck is expanding its photovoltaic capacity across all its sites
22.10.2026
Congress Messe Innsbruck is expanding its energy infrastructure: new photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of 1.19 MW have been installed at all its sites.
Expansion of photovoltaic capacity boosts event infrastructure
Congress Messe Innsbruck (CMI) has installed new photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of around 1.19 megawatt-peak at its three sites – Messe Innsbruck, Congress Innsbruck and congresspark igls. With a total of 2,648 modules, this marks a significant step towards self-sufficiency in energy supply.
New solar panels at all sites
The largest expansion has taken place at Messe Innsbruck, where 2,431 modules have been installed on the roofs of Halls A and D. This is complemented by installations at Congress Innsbruck, comprising 112 modules, and at congresspark igls, comprising 105 modules. The solar energy generated is used directly on site and contributes to the sustainable management of event operations. Since the system came online, 1,415 MWh of solar power has already been generated, equivalent to a CO₂ saving of 1,120 tonnes.
The managing directors of Congress Messe Innsbruck emphasise the importance of the investment. Hansjörg Stern explains: “With the new PV systems, we are making efficient use of existing roof space and can generate a significant proportion of our electricity requirements ourselves.” Innsbruck’s mayor, Johannes Anzengruber, also praises the project: “The new photovoltaic systems generate solar power from the roofs of the buildings themselves: With this investment in solar energy, Congress Messe Innsbruck is taking an important step toward a sustainable energy supply.”
CMI’s Sustainability Strategy
The new photovoltaic systems complement numerous existing measures at Congress Messe Innsbruck. These include deep groundwater wells for heating and cooling, solar thermal systems, smart building management systems and collaboration with regional partners. As a holder of the Austrian Ecolabel, CMI enables congresses, conferences, trade fairs and events of all sizes to be held as ‘green events’ at all three of its venues.
